A wonderfully sculptural piece of 19th-century American majolica, this footed bowl was produced by Griffen, Smith & Hill in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, circa 1880s.

The bowl is molded in the firm’s exuberant Shell and Seaweed pattern, with a shell-shaped body, richly colored seaweed decoration and a raised foot. The underside bears the intertwined G.S.H. Etruscan Majolica mark, and the form is identified as Shape J8.

This is one of those pieces that needs very little styling. Place it on a stack of books, use it as the centerpiece of a collected cabinet, or display it on its own where the modeling and saturated glaze can be appreciated.

Condition

Antique condition consistent with age and use. The bowl has overall crazing, several small nicks and glaze losses around the rim, and a larger chip to the foot. The foot chip is most noticeable when the bowl is examined from below and does not detract from its highly displayable presentation.
