DESCRIPTION

A fabulous antique Andrea Galvani Pordenone “Ferrara” transferware platter, richly decorated in chocolate brown on warm ivory terraglia.

At the center is an wonderfully detailed maritime scene of sailing ships, figures, waterfront buildings and a fantastical castle, surrounded by an extraordinarily dense border of flowers, foliage and ferns. The monochromatic brown transfer gives the entire piece the look of an old engraving.

The pattern is known as Ferrara, or Castello di Ferrara, one of the historic transfer-printed designs produced by the Galvani manufactory in Pordenone, Italy. The central scene derives from a 19th-century engraving and depicts an imagined seaport and castle intended to evoke the famed city of Ferrara.

The reverse bears the charming Galvani walking rooster mark, encircled by Andrea Galvani Pordenone, with Ferrara printed beneath.

Dating to approximately the late 19th to early 20th century, this substantial 13⅜-inch platter is beautiful enough to stand entirely on its own. Display it on an easel, hang it as the anchor of a plate wall, or layer it among brown-and-white transferware, blue-and-white porcelain and other collected ceramics.

And at more than thirteen inches across, she has presence.
