DESCRIPTION

A wonderful piece of 19th-century American Etruscan Majolica by Griffen, Smith & Hill of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, dating to circa 1880.

Known as the Cauliflower Star pattern, this richly molded plate features a luminous green center surrounded by sculptural pale pink and cream foliage, all framed by a wonderfully textural brown basketweave border. The translucent majolica glazes settle beautifully into the molded details, giving the plate the depth and variation so characteristic of Victorian majolica.

The underside bears the impressed stylized GSH monogram of Griffen, Smith & Hill. This appears to be the firm's early monogram mark, used around the beginning of its celebrated Etruscan Majolica production.

At 7.75 inches across, it is a particularly useful decorative size—beautiful displayed alone on a small wall, tucked into a larger collected plate wall, or propped on a shelf among other antique majolica.

Griffen, Smith & Hill's Etruscan Majolica was produced in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, and is among the most recognizable American majolica of the late 19th century. Its colorful naturalistic forms, basketweave surfaces and exuberant glazes have made it a favorite with both majolica collectors and decorators.
