Antique c.1880 Majolica Berry Vine Napkin Plate

DESCRIPTION

A wonderfully decorative late-19th-century Victorian majolica napkin plate, dating to approximately 1880–1900.

Designed in the playful trompe-l’oeil tradition so loved by Victorian majolica makers, the plate appears to have a woven white napkin laid diagonally across its turquoise center. A raised leafy vine trails over the napkin with clusters of dark berries, while the richly molded brown border gives the impression of a woven or ribbed basket edge.

The combination of turquoise, cream, green and warm brown is particularly beautiful—and makes this an easy piece to mix into a collected majolica wall alongside botanical plates, leaves, berries and other naturalistic forms.

The underside bears a faint impressed mark; however, it is not sufficiently legible to confidently attribute the plate to a particular factory. Rather than overstate the maker, we are offering it as an unattributed late-19th-century majolica napkin plate.

At 7.75 inches across, it is an ideal decorative scale: substantial enough to hang beautifully on its own, yet small enough to layer easily into a larger plate wall or display on a shelf.

Very good antique condition overall. No observed cracks or significant chips. There is one small irregularity along the rim that appears consistent with a glaze or manufacturing imperfection, although it could be interpreted as a tiny fleabite. It has been photographed clearly for full disclosure.
