DESCRIPTION
A wonderfully pretty late-19th-century Victorian majolica pitcher, richly molded with flowers, foliage and wonderfully textural details in a soft palette of seafoam green, blush pink, cream and warm brown.
The pitcher has a gently flared, scalloped rim and molded vertical ribbing that spills down into raised floral decoration on either side. Layers of translucent majolica glaze settle beautifully into the relief, creating the wonderfully irregular shifts of green, cream, taupe and pink that give antique majolica so much character.
The softly curving handle and generous nine-inch scale give the pitcher plenty of presence without making it cumbersome—a beautiful piece for a collected cabinet, tabletop or majolica display. It would also be fabulous filled with garden flowers, although we always recommend treating antique ceramics primarily as decorative objects.
The underside is unmarked but shows substantial age-related crazing and traditional kiln/stilt marks. Based on its construction, glazing and naturalistic molded decoration, the pitcher is consistent with late-19th-century Victorian majolica, likely English, circa 1880–1900. Without a legible maker's mark, we prefer to leave the manufacturer unattributed rather than overstate an attribution.
