Antique c.1920s Wood & Sons Woods Ware Blue Willow Platter

DESCRIPTION

A beautiful early 20th-century English transferware platter by Wood & Sons, decorated in the classic Woods Ware Willow pattern.

Rendered in rich cobalt blue on creamy white earthenware, the familiar Chinoiserie landscape features pagodas, a bridge, boat, fanciful trees and the pair of birds associated with the enduring Willow design. The scene is framed by an elaborate geometric and floral border, while the softly shaped rectangular form gives the platter wonderful presence.

The underside bears the circular Woods Ware / Wood & Sons / England backstamp incorporating the historic names Enoch and Ralph Wood. Based on the mark and form, this example dates to the early 20th century, circa 1920s.

At 13 inches wide, it is equally lovely used as serveware or displayed decoratively. Prop it on a shelf, layer it into a china cabinet, or use it as an anchor piece in a collected plate wall. Blue-and-white transferware also mixes beautifully with green, brown and multicolor English china for a wonderfully layered look.
