ANTIQUE JAMES EDWARDS “BOCHARA” MULBERRY TRANSFERWARE PLATE, CIRCA 1847–1851

More than 175 years old—and anything but shy.

Made by James Edwards at the Dale Hall Pottery in Burslem, Staffordshire, this handsome ironstone plate features the celebrated “Bochara” pattern, registered in 1847.

The richly detailed Chinoiserie scene combines a fanciful pagoda, flowering trees, stylized rockwork and exuberant blossoms. An elaborate geometric and floral border follows the plate’s wonderful twelve-sided shape.

Although the transfer appears nearly black, collectors classify this deep purple-brown color as mulberry. It has all the drama of black transferware, but with a little more warmth and depth.

Display it on its own, add it to a collected plate wall, or mix it with black, mulberry or blue-and-white transferware. It is particularly striking layered with colorful majolica, silver or brass.

CONDITION

Very good antique condition with age-appropriate crazing, light surface wear and areas of discoloration on the reverse. No chips or cracks observed. Please review all photographs, as they form an important part of the condition description.
