Not a shy bowl—and thank goodness for that.
This exceptionally rare vintage Mottahedeh porcelain punch bowl dates to approximately the 1970s and is one of those pieces that immediately gives a room that collected-over-time feeling.
At approximately 14½ inches in diameter and 6½ inches high, she has true punch-bowl scale: substantial enough to anchor a dining table, center a sideboard, fill a large console, or sit beautifully atop a stack of oversized design books.
The decoration is classic Mottahedeh exuberance—colorful birds, butterflies and flowering branches framed by a strong Greek-key border and finished with a gilt rim.
The porcelain body was made in Japan and decorated in Hong Kong for Mottahedeh. The underside bears both an “A Mottahedeh Design” mark and an ACF Japanese Porcelain Ware mark.
What makes this one especially interesting is how elusive this exact form appears to be.
Despite extensive research through dealer inventories, auction archives and the secondary market, we have been unable to locate another documented example matching this large Mottahedeh bird-and-butterfly punch bowl in its combination of scale, decoration and early production marks.
In other words: she is not the Mottahedeh bowl you see over and over again.
And naturally, that makes me love her even more.

Condition
Excellent vintage condition.
No chips, cracks, repairs or flea bites observed. Minor signs of age and use may be present, consistent with a vintage porcelain piece.

Use
Because this is a vintage decorative porcelain piece and we cannot verify modern food-safety standards for the decoration or glaze, we recommend it for decorative use.
Style it as a dramatic centerpiece, fill it with orchids or flowering branches, pile it with decorative objects, or simply let it hold court all by itself.
