A wonderfully decorative late 19th-century French inkwell cast in gilt bronze and designed in the exuberant Louis XV taste. A standing winged cherub presides over the asymmetrical base, surrounded by deeply modeled shells, scrolling foliage and floral ornament.
The removable cut-crystal inkwell is topped by an ornate floral gilt-bronze lid, while the raised gallery behind it serves as a graceful pen rest. Petite but remarkably detailed, this is precisely the sort of antique desk accessory that turns a library, writing desk or collected vignette into something memorable.
The piece is unmarked and dates to the late 19th century, circa 1880–1900.
Condition
Very good antique condition. There is localized lifting and loss to the gilt surface on the recessed platform beneath the removable crystal inkwell. This area is substantially concealed when the inkwell is seated in place. No other visible damage or notable wear observed. The cut crystal is clear and presents beautifully, with no chips or cracks noted. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of the description.
