A fabulous pair of antique French bronze candlesticks dating to the second quarter of the 19th century.

Each candlestick features a classical campana-form candle socket raised above an ornate foliate capital and a tall, tapering reeded column. Additional paw-foot supports appear beneath the upper candle cup and again at the base, creating an unusually sculptural, architectural silhouette.

The columns terminate in richly decorated tripartite bases with concave sides and substantial paw feet. Their combination of dark patinated bronze, traces of gilt finish, crisp classical ornamentation, and imposing proportions is characteristic of French Louis-Philippe design, retaining the grandeur of the preceding Empire period.

The beautifully aged surface has developed varied tones of deep brown, muted gold, and verdigris that accentuate the casting and give the pair exceptional decorative presence. We have intentionally preserved this historic patina rather than polishing the candlesticks to a bright finish.

Substantial enough for a mantel, console, dining table, or library, these candlesticks are magnificent displayed alone and even more dramatic when paired with richly colored taper candles.

Condition Report

Great care was taken when removing generations of candle wax from these nearly two-century-old beauties, preserving their time-earned patina. We have left any further polishing—and the desired level of patina—up to their next owner.

Very good antique condition with a rich, naturally aged surface. Both candlesticks stand securely and retain their elaborate architectural and foliate components. Age-appropriate oxidation, verdigris, finish variation, candle residue, and wear are present throughout, contributing to their historic character. The patina has been intentionally preserved and the candlesticks have not been polished to a bright finish. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of the description.
