Vintage Chinese Lotus & Butterfly Porcelain Vase, Late 20th Century

DESCRIPTION

She had us at the pink lotus.

This substantial vintage Chinese porcelain vase is decorated with an exuberant lotus-pond scene of soft pink blossoms, deep green lotus leaves, delicate butterflies and insects, all outlined in cobalt blue. Bands of stylized petals frame the shoulder and base, giving the large-scale vase just enough graphic pattern to make her especially good from across a room.

At 17 inches tall, she has real presence without wandering into floor-vase territory. Fill her with palm fronds, ginger, bird-of-paradise or one enormous branch—or leave her completely alone on a console, chest or pedestal.

The underside bears a blue 中国制造 / MADE IN CHINA mark. The style of the mark and decoration are consistent with Chinese export porcelain produced during the late 20th century, likely circa 1975–1995.

A particularly pretty example of vintage chinoiserie that mixes exceptionally well with bamboo, wicker, blue and white porcelain, and collected traditional interiors.
