A marvelous little gathering of color, pattern and vintage Japanese charm.

This collection of nine Japanese porcelain dishes features two coordinating scenes filled with traditionally dressed women, flowering gardens, pagodas and distant landscapes. Fine iron-red linework is enlivened with freely applied washes of brilliant cobalt blue, celadon green, coral and pink, along with touches of gold.

The blossoms are dotted with raised white moriage enamel—a dimensional decorative technique that gives the flowers an almost beaded texture. Each piece is finished with a bold, hand-decorated iron-red border.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Known among collectors as “Geisha Girl” or “Kimono Lady” porcelain, wares like these were created in Japan for the Western export market during the early to mid-20th century. Their decoration was produced using fine stenciled outlines, then enlivened by factory decorators with hand-applied washes of color. The slightly imperfect placement of those colors is part of their handmade character—and very much part of their charm.

Geisha Girl porcelain became an enormously popular and wonderfully accessible collectible. Pieces were sold inexpensively and were sometimes offered as premiums in movie theaters or through grocery promotions. What began as an everyday bit of beauty is now collected for its joyful color, nostalgic history and tremendous decorative appeal.

This set preserves two coordinating patterns across nine pieces—enough to create an instant collection without spending years hunting them down one plate at a time.

For a new collector, this grouping offers an unusually approachable way to begin, with enough color, history and visual impact to transform a cabinet, plate wall or beautifully layered table.

Especially striking mixed with Imari and blue-and-white Canton porcelain, these petite dishes add another layer of color and collected charm. You do not need to begin an entirely new collection—they will make the porcelain you already own look even better.

CONDITION

Good vintage condition with age-related wear to the painted, gilt and raised-enamel decoration. Scattered firing specks and minor surface irregularities are present. One piece has a visible hairline, shown in the photographs. No chips are apparent in the available photographs. Please review all images carefully; photographs are part of the condition report.
