DESCRIPTION

A serving bowl with enough blue-and-white drama to make even Tuesday-night pasta feel properly considered.

This generously scaled shallow bowl comes from Spode’s discontinued Blue Room Collection. The classic Willow scene—with its pagodas, bridge, boat, stylized trees and pair of birds—is surrounded by an exceptionally detailed geometric and floral border.

Although Spode first introduced its Willow design circa 1790, this particular English-made example bears the A5 date code, identifying it as 2005 production. The cobalt-blue decoration is an underglaze transfer reproduced from a hand-engraved copper plate, preserving the intricacy of the historic pattern while making the bowl entirely useful.

Its broad, shallow shape is particularly handsome filled with pasta, salad, roasted vegetables, fruit or an indecent quantity of petits fours. When dinner is over, stand it upright in a china cabinet, on a kitchen shelf or among a collection of blue-and-white porcelain.
